Really looking forward to playing the Murder Ballads Bash this year. Me, Rawbird, and Gail will be playing as the Wheel of Fortune Studio Orchestra. We will be joined by Melanie De Giovanni (of Yard Sale and the It Thing.) on accordian and vocals and by Madelyn Covey on ukulele and vocals. We plan to do 4 songs, if we can fit them into 15 minutes. Two are covers. Number 1 Song in Heaven by Sparks is about the song you will hear when you are dead. Mother's Dead is a version of Blind Willie Johnson's Motherless Children by way of Hezakiah Early and Elmo Williams from their album It Takes One to Know One on Fat Possum Records. The first original will be Fugitive Red, which I royally messed up on last year and the band wants a do-over. the song is about a woman who kills her abusive husband. You think things might work out for her, but they don't. The other new one is called The Drop. It's about a festive day in the west because a man is about to be hung.
We had been using the term geezer punk in fun because somebody had called us that once. It sounded like we owned it when ended with "kings". We're not geezers yet, but it does seem to be in the cards. Gail and I have pledge to keep doing this as long as our future walkers can hold us up and beyond. "Eh?..Whaddya say Sonny? Why I oughta....."

I had painted new backdrops for both us and the Unreal Band. Our backdrop was an evangelical image of joyous cult members dancing to the Clam god and for the Unreals I depicted Nefertiti in front of the dollar bill-eyeball pyramid with fish dancing on the red sea.

Our set included only a few songs from our CD and the rest was peppered with newer material, both originals and covers. Gail and Robert blasted out their usual, uncompromising backbeat. One of the things we like to do at our shows is add something extra to the mix when we play. This time we had the additions of Alex Day (saxaphone) and Stephen Munoz (lap steel/melodica) on our raft of clams. Gail rolled out her version of Faron Young's "Wine Me Up", ably assisted by Stephen on lap steel. We did our new song, "I Saw Him Kill Jesus". Eyebrows were raised when wild, wigged-out strains came flying out of Stephen's lap steel in the middle of "Porn Again". Alex added bouncy punches to Porter Wagoner's "Rubber Room" as well as other songs. Bongo Barry joined in on the last songs of the set. In the middle of "Killer", our bluesy number (co-written by Gail), I found myself thinking, "Is this our band?" I had so much fun.

After a quick change, aided by the fact that we used much of their equipment, the Unreal Band took over. It was now time for other side of Berkeley rock; the good feeling, jam-based, smoke some weed, dance all night kind of thing. Okay I admit, that back in the 80's, it was not my music. I was more into all-or-nothing punk music. I didn't look the punk, but that was the music that spoke to me. Though I did listen to all kinds of music before punk hit, I kinda wore the ear version of blinders for about a decade (at least). I was late to coming around to the Unreal Band. A few of the Unreal were even friends of mine (one from high school) before I started going to their shows. I've come back around to all kinds of music now, especially if it is done well. That's why I like the Unreal Band. I like how they do it. I am a fan of their rhythm guitarist, my friend Gary Robinson. He infuses the music with his infectious energy and he draws me right in. Maybe it's because he loves what he does as much as I enjoy what I do (and I hope that I show it as much as he does). That excitement comes through every time. My special faves of the evening were their renditions of the Beatles' "Things We Said Today", Gary's "Nefertiti", the classic
"Turn on Your Love Light", and a song by lead guitarist, Ron Kresh, that I don't know the name of, but they sing something to the tune of "I don't like" in the chorus. Sorry about the vague description of that last song, but you are getting a report from somebody who doesn't even know all the lyrics to his favorite Rolling Stones' songs.

It was a lot of fun. I hope we do it again.

Epilog
One of the drawbacks of the eastbay music scene is the lack of places for a hungry musician to go after a show. Many times I have heard myself say, "Naw, the only place open around here is Dennys." I've heard there is an all night sushi place, but I can never remember it when I need it. So there I was at the end of the show, my bandmates all gone home, finding myself alone and hungry. I stopped by Safeway and picked up a pre-made roast beef sandwich and some macaroni salad. When I woke up the next morning, I looked at the labels. My simple roast-beef and cheddar sandwich contained the following: unbleached enriched flour (wheat flour, malted barley flour, niacin, iron (ferrous sulfate), thiamin, mononitrate, riboflavin (folic acid), water, sugar, nonfat milk, yeast, butter (made from milk and/or cream, salt and annatto), potato flakes, contains 2% or less of the following: wheat gluten, sea salt, soybean oil, sodium stearoyl lactylate, soy flour, mono and diglycerides, calcium sulfate, cultured wheat, (milk), and soy lecithin, Then we go on to beef, water, salt, potassium lactate, sugar, sodium phosphate, sodium diacetate, sodium ethorbate, garlic powder, extracts of spices coated with: (coriander, black pepper, caramel color, garlic powder, natural smokeflavor, extractives of spices), sliced tomatoes, fresh pasturized milk, cheese cultures, salt, enzymes, annatto (color), and lettuce. *** contains soy and milk ****. We returned to the Peninsula Yacht Club for their all-day benefit for the Redwood Creek Trust. We saw old friends and made new ones. Our congratulations to the Yacht Club. Redwood City decided not to evict them in the name of progress. They built a stage in honor of their renewed future. Will there be another? We'll see. We will be going into the studio soon, perhaps in part to get our holiday song "Santa's Package" ready to its October rollout. Perhaps a Christmas release may bring out same kind of large crowd that the opening act, "Nine Pound Shadow" brought out to this year's show. Thanks guys, and thanks to the Clam faithful who came out and danced at our show. Dancing to the Happy Clams? Well stranger things have happened. The song had 7 alternative lyrics (beaten, bludgeoned, drowned, shot, stabbed, strangled, and suffocated) for the death scene. The verse used at the show was determined by having a volunteer spin a wheel of misfortune at the show. His solo guitar sets were amazing. The Clams did two sets and David played with us on about 6 songs. Our two completely different approaches to guitar played against each other well from the raucaus "Killer" (written by Gail and me) on our set to the quiet duet we did together on "Eleanor Rigby." Punkish doom and bluegrass.

We played with Goat Fluffer at the StarryPlough on Sept. 25. Many thanks to those who came out. We did a more rockin' set to suit the occasion. Goat Fluffer lived up to the promised 4 women, 3 bassists, 2 Rachels, 1 drummer and all doom. Orphans of Alien's brand of metal had a more character to it than just being metal. Their guitarist had just left the band so I (Paul Pot) ended up being the only pope of guitar for the evening. Of course, we got very few photos of us, so here is the stage backdrop for those who missed the show or just want to see it again.

I had a great time at Hardly Strictly Bluegrass. Saw so much to list like Patti Smith, Randy Newman, Ralph Stanley, and about 8other acts. Laughed when Kinky Friedman said, "I never say fuck in front of a C-H-I-L-D." Also on the bill were Bunny Numpkins & the Kill Blow-Up Reaction, The Clarences, Lance Burden, Trip to Dover (from the UK), the Fightin' Tinnitans, the Bottle Choir, and a performance by Stove that still defies description. Did it turn into the promised puppet orgy? No, not really. In fact, a few puppets, drinking Blue Hawaiians* at the bar, were heard to complain that they were disappointed that not enough of their friends bothered to show. I guess puppets gotta go to work in the morning like most other folks.

Still the Happy Clams were joined by Happy Clem (seen here in the puppet shop pointing out that his foot is still unfinished), who danced the night away and heckled Paul Pot at every turn. Andy DeGiovanni (Extra Action Marching Band, and a real cool mariachi band) guested on trumpet and trombone. The Happy Clams played four new songs: Late Again, Shy (both originals), Porter Wagoner's Rubber Room, and they finished the set, being joined by angels Allene Rohrer (Thread) and Melanie DeGiovanni (Yard Sale, Buckets, Catheads, and that real cool mariachi band), for a final rendition of the Sparks song, The Number One Song in Heaven.

Hopefully, we will have some pics from the show.

* Make a note. Gail drove and supplied umbrellas.

Don't worry. Yoko rocks! Son Sean was kinda dorky as bandleader (probably gets that from his dad), but is a fine guitar player, and it was cute how he kept calling her Mom on stage. The "new" Plastic Ono Band (without all the big names from the Brooklyn show) had good drive for the spacey, sweet, and funky numbers.

I liked the bio-film at the beginning. Maybe because it brought back a lot of fond memories, like seeing the "War is Over" billboard at Times Square when I was a teenager. The film showcased her art which was not part of the show, but is part of the whole Yoko thing. Nice to see a shot of her playing with Ornette Coleman. I made it to see the opening act, Deerhoof. They weren't my cup of tea, but it appears that a lot of the people at the show were drinking it in. I totally loved the Yoko show. She did a few songs I didn't know. At least one was from the new CD. There was a lot of incredible warbling. "Death of Samantha" was moving; gotta love those "Chicky babys". Sean backed her up on piano and guitar on some sad and soft songs that she sang beautifully in that childlike, Yoko fashion. Walking on Thin Ice was great. I coulda used more screaming on "Mind Train" but the "Lub Dubs" are always lotsa fun for me. (The "Fly" album is one of my favorites.) The encore of "Fly" with the film (excerpted to show just the naughty bits) was incredible. Sean played some amazing spacey art guitar featuring a call and response with his mom. Though Yoko had it going for "Don't worry Kyoko", the combination of the two bands was a little lackluster for what the three chord song required. It wasn't a good setup for "Give Peace a Chance", updated for today's news but a little slow (maybe because the people who joined her had to read the new lyrics as they sang them.) You gotta hand it to Yoko. She's a wonderful weirdo who remains a positive force without any negativity. Seventy-seven and still going strong. All in all, I had a blast.

Everybody found a little flashlight on their chair for the onochord (1,2,3 flashes for "I love you").

I like my flashlight.

Happy Clamshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12210362076263959694noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6651626153553948501.post-49099149768486505102010-01-17T09:38:00.000-08:002010-01-17T10:26:43.705-08:00Lotsa Fun at Chesters

Thanks to all who came out to my birthday show at Chesters with Dan Lange. Were there that many people there? As Candy said, "It wasn't a school night."

To the musicians and audience let me say, "Thank you for the most wonderful show on this Wednesday's Thanksgiving Eve Open Mic." This was one of those stellar nights that makes me really enjoy what I do every Wednesday. This open mic has got to be one of the best shows around and it's such a shame that it has to be our little secret. I get to throw a party each week, be Ed Sullivan, and not have to pay for the beer. Thank you. Thank you. ...Did I say, "Thank you?" Can't be said enough.

I'm a bit hazy on the details, as I had to make sure that the show ran well (perhaps you noticed I may have been a tad intense all evening) and I was also drinking beer. I started the show in my usual spot of sacrificial lamb. Not too much blood was spilt and some folks seemed to enjoy it. Max and Sam followed. Nice job on the Chris Smither song there, Sam. We had to juggle the lineup a bit to accomodate the TV stars (more on that in a bit), so I am grateful to Guy and Molly for moving up in the list and pitching in to keep things rolling. A big thanks to Guy for playing bass where needed. He can just play a song on the fly so, if he's there, don't be afraid to ask him to join you. Lowdown Jesus did some great harmonies on short notice.

Eventually we got to our TV stars. TV stars? Well almost. For some reason, a TV station in Spain decided that one of the members of the Horrible String Band was the typical California dude and were filming a day in his life. A typical day in the life of a Horrible String Bander just happens to include playing at the Missouri Lounge Open Mic. I just put the microphones around them and they belted out their songs on banjo, violin, guitar, standup bass, and damned powerful vocals while the Spaniard filmed. It was incredible. Also captured on film were Girl George (Madrid is gonna just love "Fucking all the Sailors in Chinatown") and what we like to call the "Soundtrack in his Own Mind" sound of Ken on electric piano (one of those with the programmed rhythm sections) accompianied by Roger Brown on guitar and yours truly on kazoo. It was kinda like the blind following the blind. Some people can't see it, but Roger and I do.

Doggie Jomo did an amazing version of a song called "Dig a Hole in the Meadow". He said he heard it in Ireland. Poor Lulu does not fare well in that story. David Matela came on and wowed us with his guitar playing. There are a lot of guitar players using a loop box, but you can always tell that they are using one. With David, people are always asking, "How does he do that?" It's so seamless when he does. He takes you for a ride. Big Bill followed with a nice couple of songs with David on guitar.

After Bill we got into the lightning round of the show. This is the part where we are running out of time and everybody gets one song and (boy oh boy!) do they ever give us their best. Eric, let me start off by saying, "I love you, man." I listened to you play and, as much as I enjoyed it, I can't remember what you sang. (You did hear the "I love you , man" part, right?) Geoff was a little under the.... okay, okay, he was polluted, but played a series of vignettes in a new tuning without falling off the chair. Staggering genius? Greg had Mike Husser and Roger join him on a Buffalo Springfield Tune. Harlan, Philo and Mike boogied. And then there was Roger. Roger Brown gave us one of those performances where his voice gently soared and his guitar sang most beautifully. Say no more.

At the end Sarah, ex-manager of the Miz, led us in a round of "You Are My Sunshine" in remembrance of Missouri staffer, Jamoki, who left us all too early last week. I only knew him in passing, but I could see he was dear to his friends, who miss him greatly. A good soul that one. Good night, kind sir.

I'm sure I've left something and somebody out. There were a ton of people there and I bet that at least 140 of them were real characters!Happy Clamshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12210362076263959694noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6651626153553948501.post-38266569740878708522009-11-21T08:49:00.000-08:002009-11-21T08:54:29.085-08:00Lookout Project Runway; Clam Fashion is on the Horizon!

Our young model (and my nephew), Sage, shows off the new look that will soon be sweeping the Clamnation! Special thanks to those who requested we play songs they missed from the early part of the set. We didn't account for the two hours as well as we should have. We'll be there again on January 15th. We'll make it a birthday party.Happy Clamshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12210362076263959694noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6651626153553948501.post-91957262531468717462009-11-07T11:57:00.000-08:002009-11-07T12:14:58.601-08:00Murder Ballads was killer fun!

The Murder Ballads Bash on Halloween was just about the best one yet! We had so much fun playing our song "Death Becomes You" and our version of Wild Man Fisher's serial killer spectacular, "Jennifer Jones", where I killed Gail in the middle of the song. The whole lot of you had me working hard but I had a great time doing it. The music was fantastic. The lightning round at the end, where everybody got one song, was tremendous as everybody put out there best, one after another. Thanks to all who came and, to all of you who musicians who couldn't make it, I've got a free poster for for you with the names of everybody whose played the open mic waiting for you! (Valid while supplies last)

Great version of "I'm Your Venus", Bill.Happy Clamshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12210362076263959694noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6651626153553948501.post-91108929551556890132009-09-29T00:35:00.000-07:002009-09-29T00:46:32.011-07:00I've not been keeping up. I apologize. Earlier this month we had the privilige of being a supporting act at Yard Sale's eastbay CD release show at the Starry Plough. Yard Sale was incredible. So was Joel Murach and the Low Rollers. Yard Sale played all the songs on their new CD and more. You can pick up that new CD "God Bless Our Camper" at Amoeba, CD Baby, and probably on Itunes and the like. I can pick one up, too. I just gave my copy away and now I need a new one. I'll race you to Amoeba.

I have absolutely no photos from this show. I saw flashes so I know there are pics out there. Send them to us! We all wonder what we look like without shaving cream.

We are looking forward to the Murder Ballads Bash on Halloween. It's a big and power-packed lineup of local talent. Killer.

If you are on Facebook. There may have been more people on stage than there were in the audience. The bright side was that the band was phenomenal and there was plenty of parking because everybody, that you find especially annoying on a summer night, was at Burning Man. The 8 piece wrecking crew was amazingly tight. Later on though, when it was pointed out that the song Lake Elsinore didn't sound like it did at other shows, Jeremy shrugged and said, "Well that may not be how it goes, but that's how it went." Chrissy giggled the whole time and some of it resembled lyrics. Joe Rut said that he played perhaps the best drum machine solo of his career. Harlan Hollander tried to join in on the solo, but it was clear he wasn't machine enough. Jeremy just smiled.

Great fun. Happy Birthday Jeremy!

(hopefully somebody took a picture)Happy Clamshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12210362076263959694noreply@blogger.com0
